The information below takes you through the process and aims to answer any questions you may have.  Please contact me directly if you have any further questions or would like to go ahead.

I complete commissions of pets, children and all types of wildlife in pencil and paint.  Certain subjects or images naturally lend themselves to one medium over another but essentially it comes down to size and preference.

Pencil commissions are completed on A4 or A3 paper.  The medium creates a detailed, more traditional portrait. The standard paper sizes allow for framing 'off the shelf' which can be very cost effective. Due to this, paper portraits do not come mounted or framed but professional quotes can be provided and framing arranged.

I prefer to only complete individual portraits on paper.  If you are looking for a double portrait I can do two individual ones that could be framed and hung next to each other or double portraits can be completed in paint.

I paint in acrylic on stretched canvas, using wide, flat brushes to produce a 'looser' style.  I really like a painting to look like a painting and not a reproduction of a photograph, so although the likeness is still key my paintings tend to be more contemporary than a traditional portrait.

Portraits generally start from 16" x 12" but canvases can be made to most sizes. If you are wanting to go large, or looking for a colourful, original piece, this is the medium!

Paintings come professionally strung and ready to hang. Framing options can also be provided.

I work from photographs and getting the right photo is essential to producing a quality piece.  An ideal photo is clear, highly detailed with natural light and available in a high resolution file that can be sent on email.

I will ask for as many photos as possible, suggesting which one I think would make the best composition.  Bear with me through this process - the right photo is key to the quality of the piece and I will be very honest if I don't think an image will transfer into a successful painting.  A commission is an investment and it's worth taking the time to get this part right!

Photography is also available at an additional charge for time and travel but I would always try and work with you to avoid this where possible unless you would prefer me to attend.

  • Take your photo in good light, preferably natural, so outside is usually best

  • A proper camera isn't necessary - a good quality phone camera should be fine

  • Take the photograph at eye level if possible. With dogs, for example  kneel down to their level

  • Whether animals or children, a slight angle of the head can create a nice profile shot and works well for composition

  • For dogs I prefer to work on images where the subjects mouth is closed if possible

  • For horses or pets, try and get their attention for an alert/ ears forwards shot

  • Black and white photos are fine for a pencil drawing but full colour images are required for a painting

  • For double/multiple portraits, I prefer to work from just one image rather than creating a combined portrait from two photographs for example.  This is all down to the composition, I like to ground my subjects rather than have them floating on the canvas and this all combines to make a more believable piece.

A professional framing service is available for both paintings and drawings.  When the work is completed I can provide images of a number of suggested mouldings along with pricing options and arrange the framing for you direct with the framers.

Framing can take at least 3 weeks if the desired frame is not in stock so please allow extra time for this.

Once a suitable reference photo is chosen, a deposit is required to secure the order.  At this point I will set aside the adequate time in the diary to complete the piece.  Commissions are carried out on a first come basis.

Regular progress updates will be provided along with images (unless you prefer a surprise!)

The final balance is only due once the commission is complete and you are 100% satisfied with the work. Any P&P will be added at this stage and I will provide bank details for a BACS transfer.  Once received your piece will be posted.

Time scales will vary dependent on the medium, size and complexity of the portrait, plus the time of year. If your commission is a gift with a deadline, please allow as much time as possible from enquiry.  Around Christmas in particular I can be very busy and I am often fully booked by the end of the summer.

A rough guide for single portrait painting would be 6 weeks. For a drawing, 4 weeks once the reference photos is agreed.

Local delivery is able FOC or commissions can also be collected.

All postage and shipping is at an additional cost and will be quoted individually.  Worldwide shipping is available.

Prices vary dependent on medium, size and subject. Please enquire for a detailed quote.
